What We Learned...

It was wonderful to have Mike home again and in spite of the challenges, it was not easy for Mike to go back to the hospital Sunday night.  Things we learned:
  • This carpet is extremely difficult to wheel on.

  • Couches are cozy and comfortable to sleep on whether you are paralyzed or not!

  • Unless you have a pedestal sink, you can never face a sink straight on while in a wheelchair.  Instead, you wheel up to the sink sideways and twist your body.

  • The “high” table we were worried about was not so high after all.  We made do just fine for the weekend and with a small platform, he could use the table all the time.

  • I have a much greater understanding as to why Mike catches little naps during the day when I realize how much he has to be up during the night doing turns and catheterizing!

  • Hospital beds that can raise and lower have definite advantages.

  • It’s not that hard to “bump” someone up or down the stairs but having to do it multiple times during the day could get tiring.

  • When it rains outside, your wheelchair leaves little black marks on light carpet when you don’t wipe down the tires.

  • You can take the door right off if you need that extra inch.

  • Cooking simply tastes better at home, even when it’s just a bun and salad.

  • We can hardly wait until Mike is home for good!

There is no place like home! What amazing progress. It has been hard work for all but, to go home and in many ways do self care is great.
Keep on amazing us!

So great to hear about the trip home. Also glad that you enjoyed yourselves, and the lessons that came along with the adventure.

May God continue to pour out His blessings in your lives.

It was great to see you guys on the weekend, hard as it must have been to leave home when Mike was finally there! Praying that you will soon find the right house to bring him home to...

Every day will bring ith it new adventures and some frustrations. Learning to laugh at the situation will help. I am reading a funny book called "the sacred diary of Adrian Plass (aged 37 3/4's)
A light comical look at christianity.(get a copy if you can it is hilarious)

Glad you can come home soon Mike, it ill be great for all of you.
Keep on working at all your hospital activities. You are such an inspiration!!
Praying for God's grace and strength for you all.

Glad to hear that you were able to get out of the hospital for a weekend...I'm sure it was very refreshing! After all, there's no place like home!!! I'm sure it will take some time to get used to all the changes in your life and it will be an ongoing lifelong learning experience, but this will only make you stronger!!!

I've had a lifestyle change this past weekend as well...Ryan and I finally got married! It's a bit weird signing for stuff right now because not everything is changed over to my new married name yet. I know it's not quite the same life change as you've had but in the end it still takes some getting used to. In the meantime, I'll laugh when I can't decide (or figure out) which name to sign!!!

Still praying for you and your family...praying for the right home to come along, and praying for personal strength spiritually and physically. You have been an incredible inspiration to me and all the people who love you! May you always find understanding in all of God's work in your life.

Hi Barkers! It sounds like it was a useful experience having Mike home in a not so "wheelchair-friendly" environment. Seeing first hand what worked and didn't work will probably be helpful in finding and redesigning a new home. God speed in your search.

Hi Mike, sure was nice to talk to you the other day. So glad everything went well over the weekend. Mike soon you will be counting the 'SLEEPS' before you can go home to stay. Matt thanks so much for all the updates, and yes I think a book would be a great idea.
Praying always,

great, so great to be with you all the other day; what incredible people you are. and, what fun to sit and laugh together.

continuing to pray; to especially pray that the new, and the things you've learned, do not discourage, but instead inspire and that the strength of our Almighty carries you.
