Hands

Please pray! Mike had a bad night last night and lost feeling in his hands. They are unsure if this is due to swelling or if it is permanent damage. Please pray that this is not permanent as Mike already has so little and doesn't need to loose more. The doctors are doing xrays to find out more.

Please Lord, let him keep his hands.

***Update***

We talked to the doctor today about Mike's new loss of feeling. Mike has reduced function in his hands and some loss of sensation in his upper chest. His hand movement is slow compared to what it used to be and he has lost much of his strength in his hands. After the x-rays, the doctor's told us that there is no new damage to the spinal cord and the reduced function is probably due to swelling. This makes them hopefull that what Mike lost today he will regain some time in the future. However, the doctor's did not seem to have a great idea of what actually happened to make Mike loose this sensation. Because there was no movement of the bones and no new damage, the surgury will almost certainly happen on Thursday.

Hey Mike,
You are constantly in my prayers. I pray that God would continue to give you faith, hope, and courage.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

I am amazed each time I hear the different ways in which you continue to be you during this time. The love, concern and care you have for those around you is amazing! You are such a blessing to everyone who has met you. And even to those who haven't, but are learning, through reading this blog, what an amazing guy you are. :) I know we haven't spent all that much time together, but you definitely made me laugh and smile anytime I did see you. Be encouraged and know that I and many other people will continue to keep you in our prayers.

Two versus came to mind this morning for you Mike:

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
Isaiah 58: 8-9

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
Proverbs 16:24

May you feel the Lord’s hands surround you in healing love and may you hear the pleasant words of prayer which so many speak for you.

Michael,

This is Emily, your cousin thomas' girlfriend from Vancouver.
Ever since I heard about your accent I have been praying so hard. so often. so deliberately.
Today, especially, I have been praying for your hands. "Lord, please give michael his hands..."
I know that the Lord is faithful
and I know he hears the cries of his people.
I also know that his answers are not always what we are anticipating. (but that they are always best)

Your courage and strength astounds me- as does the perseverance and faith and hope of all those surrounding you.
You are being held by such loving arms, and uplifted by countless hearts.

this is part of my journal entry from May 19th....
I remember that I was sitting at my kitchen table as I wrote to God, on your behalf.

"God, I give you Michael,
Confident that you hear all of our prayers however small or silent.
Please help him to feel your presence.
Grant him peace that transcends all understanding.
Relieve his pain Lord, and ease the pain of those around him.
Bless the doctors and nurses, the medication, the machines...
may they work towards your glory.
Heal his body Lord.
Renew it to whatever state you desire Lord.
Help us to accept whatever that may be."

Within our darkest night he kindles a fire that never dies away.
Never dies away.

I pray for light
in you
around you
radiating out of you

amen.
so be it.

blessing and prayers,
you are so very very loved.

Mike,

You don't really know me (another stranger), but we do share an Aunt & Uncle (Mary & Tim), and I have to admit that I am guilty of stealing attention from your grandparents (Dickau) as well - I think we may have met at their anniversary celebration.

Aunt Mary sent an email last week when all of this happened to ask us all for prayers and blessings upon you. Although you probably have no idea who I am, The Dickau Family Circle (Barker's included) has meant the world to me and my family through the years. The news of your accident struck me as though you were a part of my own family. I have been praying for you since I heard.

What a great idea for your brothers to keep us posted with this blog. Thank you. You have allowed us to see the great things that the Lord can do when we pray. Everything from a Booster Juice to giving you and your family strength to stay positive and faithful through these trials - they are each blessings.

You have a lot of people praying for you Mike - people you've never met, some you never will meet - but we all care for you.

I pray that the Lord will soothe your pain; that He will ease your worries. I pray that your body will be mended through the healing power of His Love. I pray that you will be strong to face your surgery on Thursday. I pray that you will be surrounded with the Love of the Lord and that through His grace He may grant you peace.

He has a plan for you; He knew each step you would take long before anyone else even thought of you. This is all a part of His plan - and His plan will become clearer to you in time. Rest assured that God is working right now; He is there with you - ALWAYS. Ask Him, pray to Him, cry out to Him - He will not let you down. Through Him all things are possible!

God Bless!

Mike,
you dont know me but after reading this blog, comments and all i feel as though i know you... my name is gina-louise and i work with your brother steve at storm and revolution...when i heard of your accident i was in utter shock and to this point i still don't know exactally what to say but what first came to mind was steve's saying to the kids at storm. he would say 'God is good' and no matter when he said it or where they were the kids would yell in response 'all the time.' so i say to you God is good....all the time and all the time God is good.... God can do anything...i mean ANYTHING...and you know what.. i have a little story for you to show the power of prayer and the power that God has... my cousin just had a baby a couple months ago and when he was delieverd everything was fine, and was perfect for a few weeks. but one day he started to turn blue. so they brought him into the hospital and they did an ultrasound of his heart and discovered that the largest artery and vein inside his heart were combined. which is VERY bad...this poor 3 week old perfect little boy was going to need 5 surgeries to fix the problem...my cousin brought the situation to their church and they prayed continually...he was going in for his check-up before the surgery two weeks later and the doctors were STUMPED...his heart was perfect again it was fixed without a single surgery...the doctors had no way of explaining it but a miracle....in the doctors' 50 years of combined expierence they had never seen anything like this before. i tell you this story to give you hope, which you probably already have, but the hope that God will make this better for you... but also to tell you that i, my family, and my cousin and her family are all praying for you...God loves you mike! never forget that....his arms are around you right now as you are reading this...he feels your pain and is right along side of you and will be forever...

Hey Mike,

Sending my prayers to the Barker family. Mike, so many are praying from all over. I've seen comments from Oregon, Alberta, Edmonton (oops Edmonton is in Alberta--sorry not so hot on the Canadian geography lol), your high school, Vancouver, Camrose, Nashville Tennessee, Romania, Thailand, Hungary (these people's locations when praying are starting to sound like an international salad) England, India, London Canada, Puyallup Pennsylvania, Trinidad and Tobago, Crossfield, Ontario, Taylor university in Indiana (my friend calls it the hick town with one restaurant and a nameless grocery store.) Not to mention all of us at Grace cc praying for you, and all my fellow church goers who live north of Detroit- like the Johnson’s, Harrison township and my family. You have been amazingly upbeat and I pray the loss of feeling in your hands is only temporary. God will do a miracle.

God NEVER fails.

NEVER lose hope.

NEVER lose sight of the Savior

Let ‘NEVER’ remind you of the king of kings who is smiling right now from the High throne. You are a child of God... never forget that. One of the verses that I feel summarizes my life is Isaiah 40:31. "They that wait upon the LORD will renew their strength. They will Soar on wings like eagles; they will RUN and never grow weary, they will walk and Never be faint." Never weak again, live strong, brother.

Hebrews 12: 1-3

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us...run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the JOY set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you WILL NOT grow weary and lose heart."

I'm praying for your Thursday surgery too.

I can't think of another person who will make it through these rough times like you will Mike. You are so full of energy and life, that before you know it, you will be back out there flirting with the ladies.

Just remember, when you pick a flower, you only pick the best. This is was God does. Don't be mad at Him. He has picked you, because He knows that this will only be a minor bump in the road, that you will go on living life carefree

I have to admit that after reading about Mike’s hands this morning, I did more shouting at God than praying. With hundreds of people praying for Mike, where was God that Mike might be faced with an even greater loss of mobility? After He listened to me silently vent for awhile, I settled down and began to pray, and started to listen to Him – and He showed me where He has been…

God’s hand was on the truck as it crossed in front of the semi at highway speed – a few seconds, a few feet, and we might be gathered around a casket instead of a hospital bed.

God’s grace covered Mike, protecting him as the truck was crushed around him – he may never regain his legs, he may never have full use of his hands, but he still has and will always have that Michael Barker smile and charm – what fraction of an inch was there between his head and a hard place that might have taken that from him too – were it not for God’s presence at that time?

God’s mercy was on Cody, the other young man in the truck, who walked away with little physical harm. For the many people reading this blog who don’t know Cody, you also won’t know that less than a year ago, Cody lost his father to cancer, and a few months prior to that, his grandmother to cancer as well. Through the grace of God, Cody’s family was spared another helping of grief, and are able to gather round Mike and family in prayer at this time. I give thanks for that.

God’s timing is present in the elimination of Neil’s work position in Lac La Biche, and his transfer to Edmonton a short time before Mike’s accident. Where two weeks ago, the Barker family were still saddened at the prospect of having to leave their home in Lac La Biche to move to Edmonton, there is no other place that Neil or Brenda could be right now, than in Edmonton with their son.

And finally, God was present in the words of the message preached to Mike’s home church in Lac La Biche, where Pastor Fish has been preaching sequentially out of the Gospel of John starting months before the accident – and the message entitled “Why?” that had been prepared for this past Sunday that came from John 9:1-3:

As he went along, He [Jesus] saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

Mike, God’s work is being displayed mightly in your life right now. He has been with you from the second that truck began to drift across the center line, and in all things that have happened since. Indeed, He has been with you and your family long before that, and He will continue to be with you long afterwards – even to eternity. He is going to continue to display His works in you – it is evident in the witness of everyone who logs onto this site. I have no doubt that He is going to further display His work, His love, His mercy and His healing through you to people in ways that would not have happened had He not seen you through this time in your life.

I thank God, and continue to pray, that the loss of feeling in your hands is indeed only temporary, and will continue to pray for healing for you. The question to ask is not where was God when you were in this accident, but where would you be if had He NOT been there.

Mike, Matt, Steve & Lori, Neil & Brenda, “May the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance”, and may you find strength in the love and prayers of His people.

Hey Mike
For the past two days I have been sitting in my cubicle checking your site every 5 minutes. It fills me with hope that everytime I check there is another comment telling you how much you are loved. We are here for you, and will be with you every step of the way because we know that you would do exactly the same for each and every one of us. You are a wonderful human being and have inspired so many people. Have a good day and I'll see you next time I'm in the city.

hey man,

a few words from the scriptures:
Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind. 9Then when you call, the LORD will answer. `Yes, I am here,' he will quickly reply.
(Isaiah 58:8-9)

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails
(Proverbs 19:21).

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father encourage you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say. God loved us, and through his grace he gave us a good hope and encouragement that continues forever.
(2 Thessalonians 2:17)

I'm cheering for you, mike

I am truly amazed at the balm of comfort that even this site gives to me and obviously many others. Thanks guys for including us in such a marvelous and personal way.
I have another song for today and especially for tomorrow.
I want to encourage whoever can to make tomorrow(surgery day) a day of prayer, fasting and bringing forward Mike and his family to the Lord. The Lord is Good.

Here is the song I keep singing and praying to the Lord...

I cry out for Your hand of mercy to heal me.
I am weak, I need Your love to free me
O Lord, my Rock, my strength in weakness
Come rescue me, O Lord
You are my hope
Your promise never fails me
And my desire is to follow You forever
For You are good
FOR YOU ARE GOOD
Lord You are good to me!!!

Mike we are inserting your name as we pray...

I cry out for Your hand of mercy to heal MIKE
He is weak,Mike needs Your love to free him...
Praying for your healing Mike!!!

What do we do when everything we believe in is shaken to the very core? How can we believe that ALL things work together for our good? We close our eyes and hold on for dear life and eventually we see, that, even when we couldn't find our faith, He DID get us through , He DID equip us with what we needed to get through each day. That much I KNOW for sure. These are your promises. God is still the same. We are asking and believing Him for BIG THINGS for you, Dear One.

Hey Michael,

I still can't believe what happened. It's amazing how in a split second everything can change. I never knew you that well at school, but from what I did know you are the most incredible person in the world. You have such a gift to make everything seem great and your zest for life is contagious. It seemed like you could always find something awesome out of every situation...keep looking for the positive. I know if anyone can make lemonade out of this, it's you. Our prayers are with you! You've got the entire world rooting for you!

Sodium Levels - Hi Brenda & Neil. You might want to check Mike's sodium levels. I read Monday's entry today - sodium is required for transmission of nerve impulses and proper muscle function. If his levels are still low it COULD be contributing to his new muscle weakness. I'm not sure that it is the cause - but it is something to rule out. I

Hey Mike, I don't really know you, but I am praying for you. I even wrote a poem for you! : )
Here you go:

You're in our hearts,
and on our minds.
The love for you
comes in many kinds.

God's love for you
is very strong.
Remember that
all day long.

The prayers are endless,
From all over;
From Florida
Up to Vancouver!

In all the hurt
and terrible pains,
God loves you and
God always reigns.

We pray for you
and hope for the best.
We realize how much
we are blessed.

And as I sit here
this afternoon,
all I can say is...
Feel better soon!

Soon it will be time for your surgery. The fasting will be an inconvenience, but the fears will be real. Alot of unknowns. But there is a constant - TRUST in the Lord and he will be with you to protect and comfort you, TRUST in those caring for you, and TRUST in the support of your family and friends. I like many others will be thinking of you and praying for your recovery. Amaze them all!
Brenda, Neil, Steve, Lori, Matthew and Cody I pray that God also takes care of you and holds you in the palm of his hand. Thank you for this site and opportunity to say how much we care.
With much love Shelly

Psalm 91
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [a]

2 I will say [b] of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."

3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare
and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.

8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—
even the LORD, who is my refuge-

10 then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation."

May the Lord bless you and heal you
